What to Look for in an Office Chair

Seat Height
17–21 inches accommodates most adults. Pneumatic adjustment is standard — avoid anything that requires tools to change it.
Lumbar Support
Adjustable lumbar follows your spine's curve. Fixed lumbar only fits one body type — and probably not yours.
Weight Capacity
Standard chairs: up to 250 lbs. Big & tall: 400–500 lbs. Always verify the rating before purchase.
Seat Depth
16–18 inches fits most people. Adjustable depth lets taller or shorter users dial in the right fit.

Specs Worth Checking Before You Buy
- BIFMA Certification — The Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association sets durability and safety standards. Look for BIFMA compliance on any chair going into a commercial environment.
- Warranty — Task chairs: look for 5+ years on the mechanism. Executive and big & tall: 3–5 years minimum. A chair with a one-year warranty is a furniture gamble in a busy office.
- Armrest Type — Fixed armrests fit almost nobody. 4D armrests (height, width, depth, pivot) are ideal. 2D (height + width) is the minimum for a full workstation setup.
- Cylinder Height — Pneumatic cylinders come in standard and tall versions. If you have employees over 6'1", confirm the cylinder raises the seat high enough for a standard desk height.
